We’re running for the trails in our KEEN trail runners – and sharing stories from the people getting after it in them. This year, KEEN Canada was proud to sponsor the Caledon Crusher, a trail race that brings together endurance, community, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors.
To represent KEEN Canada on the trails, we partnered with ambassador Julia Thrasher, a movement instructor from Collingwood. Coming from road racing, Julia noticed right away that trail running asks something different of you. From first-time trail racer to fully hooked, Julia’s experience at the Caledon Crusher is exactly why we’ve loved joining this sport, and this community.
My Race Log
Location: Caledon Crusher Trail Race in Caledon, Ontario
Distance: 25K
Shoes worn: KEEN Seek trail runners
Fuel: Gels every 40 minutes
Hydration: Regular electrolytes
Mindset: “Zero expectations and an open heart”
This was my first trail race! I was really drawn to the mix of trail and endurance - it felt like a fresh challenge compared to road racing. I had some marathon experience going into it but trail running brings such a different energy, so it felt both exciting and a little unknown.
The toughest moments were when fatigue started to build on the climbs. It was painful… but I kept coming back to simple thoughts like ‘just keep moving forward’ and focusing on my breath.
My Training:
I focused on building weekly mileage with a mix of long runs, steady efforts, and strength training. I also tried to incorporate more hills and uneven terrain to feel prepared for the course. Consistency was my main priority!

Favourite Part:
Being immersed in the trail environment and taking in the beauty of the terrain.
Toughest Part:
The climbs, especially as fatigue started to build.
Personal Takeaway:
I tried to stay present and take it section by section rather than getting too far ahead of myself. I kept the mindset of trying to enjoy this new experience with zero expectations and an open heart.
My Shoes:
I ran in the KEEN Seek, and they felt supportive and stable right away, which I appreciated on the uneven terrain. During the race they handled the trails really well. I felt confident on both climbs and descents.
Finish Line Feeling:
Relief, pride, and gratitude. It’s such a rewarding feeling after pushing through something challenging! Trail racing takes a lot longer than road racing, I’ve learned… I was definitely tapped by the end.
Pro Tips:
Expect the unexpected. Train for hills and changing terrain. Keep fueling simple and consistent. Stay present and break the race into sections. And when it gets tough, just keep moving forward.
